I think you can learn a lot by setting your ego aside and not having to play as first person in this video game of life at all times. And that is what I did for these next few months, I was no longer the star of my show for the first time. I poured my soul into someone else’s pursuit and in the end it didn’t play out exactly as planned and I even lost a bit of money in the process, but I took away a lot of unexpected inspiration and wisdom that fed into my next few years. This is a short story that starts with Paul and Mikhail (both helped me at The Hostel in the Forest). We discovered Paul (stage name at this time Forest Evans) had a natural knack for singing, as well as being somewhat of a song writing savant and Mikhail a skilled guitarist. I was the cohesive force that married the dynamic duo in order to create some really unique music, even though unfortunately the “finished” product never quite finished enough to be deemed worthy for the public. But I may release it all here and now as well as compile the video footage into a short documentary in the near future. I did pay for it after all… And it’s still my belief we had a few big winners sprinkled in there. So anyways, we all skipped out on a chilly winter in the Hostel and headed for warmer vibrations in SoFlo, Boynton Beach to be specific, a beautiful mellow little beach town. A perfect place to chase some dreams.
The initial idea was to lay down some nice simple tracks and put a solid demo together. A vocal track, guitar track and maybe a harmonica here and there for each song, something along the lines of modern indie folky rock (unplugged Incubus vibes perhaps?). Unfortunately Paul couldn’t stay true to that idea with (possibly detrimental) encouragement from the sound engineer, who suddenly had him doing multiple harmonizing vocal tracks and 2 guitar tracks, which transformed it into a serious project with seriously limited funds.
After a month or 2 Paul and Mikhail were no longer seeing eye to eye, so we hitchhiked to Naples to draw up some new plans while traveling back and forth to Boynton to continue trying to finish recording tracks in the studio.
I got in touch with another musically inclined friend from the Hostel who was based in Orlando and interested in working on some stuff with us. So we were on the move once again, caught a ride to St. Petersburg and spent a few days there before my friend dropped us off in Orlando.
After a few weeks of more trial and error we left Florida and retreated back into the forest from which we came. It was a beautifully chaotic time in my life that inspired me to start creating my own music that started while in Boynton Beach, a song hastily recorded into my computer with the assistance of Mikhail, which I still plan on professionally recording (as well as others) so will see where that goes…
